Dwyer to Represent Jamaica in Davis Cup

By: Jeremiah Williams

Hampton Men’s tennis graduate student, Cliff Dwyer is set to represent Jamaica in the 110th edition of the Davis Cup, beginning with the World Group 2 playoff first round in Athens, Greece.

Created in the 19000s, Davis Cup tennis is one of the most honorable international team events in Men’s tennis.

“When I found out I made the Jamaican Davis Cup team, I was in complete joy. This was a dream of mine ever since I was the a little boy,” said Cliff Dwyer

Dwyer, from Ocho Rios, Jamaica, transferred to Hampton during his junior year of college. Dwyer spent his first two years at Iowa Central Community College.

Arriving to campus with high expectation Dwyer seized the moment when he found out that he was going to be apart of the team.

Highlighting Dwyer and Jamaica tennis, pressure was on Cliff and team Jamaica to make noise during these international games.

“When you are fighting for your country, the pressure mounts up because you have your country on your hands. There isn’t know tomorrow.”

First serve took place and Dwyer started solid by securing Jamaica first point vs. Greece. Playing #2 singles and dictating the points disrupted his opponents.

“I started out quicker than expected, but that's what happens when you play in the arena when facts are screaming for you.”

With faith and the help of family and friends, Dwyer understands where his support comes from. Entering this new phase of tennis, Cliff understands opportunities like these rarely come.

“Davis Cup traveling international for tennis doesn't always come, so cherish every moment.”

Having Dwyer represent team Jamaica shines a light on Hampton University's tennis program, because he is a product of his own environment.

“By playing Davis cup I want to bring more Caribbean players to Hampton so that legacy of playing for countries is continued.”
